HELMS ALEE - "8/16" music video premiere on VEVO

So, the video I directed for HELMS ALEE's "8/16" is finally out. Not only that, but on the front page of VEVO, which means it is getting millions more impressions than I ever would have imagined.

I had a lot of fun making it, especially going up to Seattle and shooting with the band (total DIY friend-fest. We owe a bunch of people hugs and favors.) It was stressful at times, but I was always sure we were working on something awesome. I am extremely proud of how it came out.

Ben told me about the idea for the video when the band was on tour with Boris around the time my video for Torche's "UFO" came out. Which means this was waaay before any of us knew that Beavis and Butthead was going to be back on TV.

So months go by, the band records Weatherhead and we pick up discussion of the video. At one point I proposed shooting them as live action versions of Beavis and Butthead, mostly because I was nervous about animating. We settled on the concept of the video pretty much as it came out, and I suggested trying out Kickstarter to get a decent budget to make the video (when I made the Torche video, what little money we spent came out of my own pocket). I'd do some things differently in hindsight, but mostly it went really well, and we got enough money to do the video.

Shooting the video and editing were smooth, and animating was too, but it is always a pretty slow process. I did all the drawings by hand then scanned, colored, and arranged them digitally. It took longer than I anticipated (as usual). When I gave the band an ETA I doubled how long I thought it would take and ended up being right on the money. It could have been done more quickly, but making videos isn't my full-time job (yet?).

So in the time it took to make the video, Beavis and Butthead returned to MTV, grunge returned to the fashion world, and at Trader Joe's I've started hearing the songs whose videos we re-created.

"8/16" comes from Helms Alee's second full length album Weatherhead. Produced by Matt Bayles in the winter of 2011, and released the following July, Weatherhead finds the band expanding on what AVClub calls 'impossibly catchy heaviness'. Tours with Torche, Big Business, Boris and Minus the Bear have helped the band, and now Weatherhead, put grunge right back on the map.

Brian Linek was in town and we decided to make a short film together. A short film which follows two odd guys in a backyard one afternoon. Paddle ball, treasure hunting, and stories about stairs combine in this peculiar foray.

The idea behind the video was to do an updated version of kaiju giant monster / robot movies. I watched Godzilla: Tokyo SOS on Netflix streaming a year or so ago and was kind of enamored with the kitschy effects. I didn't have that much experience with Adobe After Effects, so going into the project knowing I wanted it to look sloppy made things less daunting.

I started the video on my own, without any solicitation, for an entirely different song by an entirely different band (Daughters' "The Theatre Goer"). But it was taking too long and that band broke up before the record dropped, so I switched it to the Torche song.

I did pretty much everything I could myself, with help from family and friends. I drew all the designs and storyboards while listening to the song on loop. There were originally five monster designs, one of which was a giant space squid that would appear while the first four were fighting, and take them all on. I had to simplify for my own sanity, though, and ended up with just the robot and the pudge monster. I made the robot out of old boxes and packing tape from the Hydra Head shipping room, and learned to sew to make the monster costume.

I bought a bunch of green fabric in the fashion district for the green screen. All of the monster and robot green screen stuff was shot in my parents' driveway and backyard in Pasadena, CA on a Sony HDR-HC7 camcorder. The last shot of the video is my brother and mom holding the green screen, and is pretty much how all of the footage looked originally. The backgrounds are photos I took of downtown Los Angeles, and the fleeing crowd (of my friends and family) I shot in the warehouse district in front of my wife's old art studio (which is also where they filmed the Soloist, almost every crime drama on TV, and M.I.A.'s "Born Free" music video).

After shooting everything on weekends over a few months, I sat at my computer for hours upon hours doing the effects on my days off . An eight hour day usually yielded 15 seconds of finished footage. From conception to completion the whole thing took about 9 months. Thankfully the band liked it and I didn't have to find another song to cut it to.

If we had done everything by the book as a real production, the budget would have exceeded ten grand easily, but I think I ended up spending about $140, including the wrap bbq.

Elysian Park Museum of Art at LACE

I should have mentioned this earlier, but I did a piece called "Piñata Pulley" in conjunction with the Elysian Park Museum of Art in a group show called "Diversions". Now a couple pictures of it are in a slide show at LACE as part of the EPMoA Visitor Center, which is up through December 19, 2010. There are still cool things happening all the time at EPMoA (like last weekend's scavenger hunt!), so keep checking back.

LACE is proud to present Elysian Park Museum of Art (EPMoA) running 13 October – 19 December 2010 as a part of its PUBLIC INTEREST initiative. A constantly evolving association of artists and curators involved with EPMoA have created site-specific performances, installations, and actions that consider the fractured geography of the park — its unmapped trails, picnic areas, a stadium, a police academy, highway onramps, radio towers, squatter communities, and parking lots — with the goal of creating a cohesive investigation into the contemporary function of a museum, a park, and public spaces in general.

Since October 2009, the EPMoA has existed as a curatorial workshop, initiated through Telic Arts Exchange’s Public School Project, and as a public forum encouraging participation from a diverse and unaffiliated section of the park-using community. Through a series of monthly meetings in the park, participants have worked together to address issues of how to implement creative actions within the parameters of public fair use of Elysian Park, as well as raise questions about the relevance and significance of this project within the overlapping contexts of art history, local politics, and public engagement.

The LACE galleries have been transformed into the park visitor's center complete with artifacts, benches, and foliage. The installation documents and recreates past and current EPMoA actions inside the park. Representatives of both the curatorial workshop and the park-using community will take part in the selection and presentation of documentation (sound recordings, photography, video, illustration, re-enactment, written description, etc.)

Additional performances and site-specific interventions allowed by fair use of the park are scheduled to occur inside Elysian Park during the course of the exhibition. Public events at LACE include performances, a class in museum studies and a guest speaker series to discuss the role of a museum, the ecology of the park, and more.

This is almost as exciting as when I got my picture in the newspaper for lining up in costume for the Star Wars midnight screening (both times).

UPDATE: THIS WAS AN APRIL FOOL'S JOKE

HOLY CRAP!!! LOOMIS IS GETTING HIS OWN CARTOON! AS IN EPISODES AIRED ON TELEVISION SHOW!

I put together a pitch with character descriptions and designs, rough story outlines, and a sample script and submitted it to a bunch of networks including Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, MTV and Disney.
I JUST GOT AN EMAIL FROM CARTOON NETWORK SAYING THEY WANT TO DEVELOP IT TO AIR IN A TIME SLOT LEADING UP TO ADULT SWIM!
Episodes will probably be fifteen minutes long. We still have to iron out the details, but there is definitely going to be a pilot, and if it tests well online, it will be slotted on an actual tv schedule! I can't wait to get working on it!

I have been defacing this old King Arthur book for a long time, using it as a sketchbook, with the intention of duplicating it and selling copies later on. This is one of the few pages that actually illustrates what is happening in the text it is drawn on. It was nice doing a page of straightforward comic book panels.

I am nearing completion on the third volume of my unintentionally annual mini-comic, Pocket Book. This one continues the tradition of doubling the dimensions of the previous issue, measuring 4.25"x5.5" (yes that is a quarter page of copy paper). 36 pages, the most of any pocketbook yet. Here is a peek at one:

I drew it at the laundromat today, which was extremely hot. I sweated the whole time I was there, even when I was drinking a cold Kern's Nectar Mango juice.

I don't usually get starstruck, but I got pretty nervous around this guy. I wanted to talk to him, but he was with his woman and I didn't want to draw attention to him, because it looked like I was the only one to recognize him. So I passed them a few more times around the store, then watched them check out while I waited in line. When he was passing toward the exit I snapped this pic with my camera.

Upcoming Performances

I am performing at two different events within the next five days.

First up, this Saturday (December 6th), I will be performing within Martin Kersels' retrospective Heavy Weight Champion at the Santa Monica Museum of Art at Bergamot Station. I will be performing with George Geiger and Anthony Rodriguez on Martin's piece "Rickety," which is a stage held up by various pieces of furniture. We will be going on between 1 and 2pm (probably towards 2), so you will still have time to have a Saturday afterward (unless you stay for the rest of the performances which go until 5, I believe).

Second, on Monday, December 8th, I will be performing a collaborative music piece made with the new programming language called ChucK. It is a collaboration with Roger Marcello (Bucc Rogerz), and starts at 8pm in the Roy O. Disney hall at CalArts (24700 McBean Parkway, Valencia, CA, 91355).

The road trip movie is nearing completion, tentatively titled Wherever We Happen To Be. Rough cut is done, clocking in at 93 minutes. I'll trim a few things, adjust some sound, add a little music here and there, polish the credits, and that should be the end. It's a lot better than I expected. Meaning it is not the most boring, retarded, oblique, garbage cellphone-quality video ever produced, which is what I sometimes thought was going to come out of all this. No, it's entertaining and hopefully a little ingenious. School is starting. Snap.

L'Oreille Cassée

The ceiling of our apartment caved in so Brian Linek and I made this video for Jesu's "Why Are We Not Perfect" from the Jesu/Eluvium split LP.
Also, Akina and I are going to Germany and (probably) Italy the first week and a half of September. Got some spare euros?
Also also, I have a solo art show at CalArts October 14th-19th that I am not working on enough.

Moved, Movie, Moving

We moved near Los Feliz. It's nice. Hardwood floors, high ceilings. Akina is an intern at Black Dragon Society, and I might be soon. I got a $2500 grant from the Alumni fund to make a movie about three kids raised in a cult who drive across the desert in an old volvo going to thrift stores. I'll probably be shooting on a Panasonic DVX-200. A notch below the HVX-200, but almost my ideal. I need to hammer down a schedule. And maybe script some of it. We are working on canvas totes in addition to all the other stuff that I haven't finished yet.
Tomorrow there is an opening at Black Dragon in Chinatown, as well as some other galleries. Come, it should be fun.

Making Stuff

I'm working on some stuff right now, like a new zine in a new format, a Skelekid limited edition print, the Robot & Ninja comic, the script for the Skelekid graphic novel, music, and some videos.
I've been transforming bass tabs into sheet music so Akina can play them on her cello. We are working on some sweet covers. Maybe we will even perform them one day.
Coachella has pretty much lost its allure for me.
I really want a Panasonic AG HVX-200. My birthday is July 19th.

RIP Keyboard

I just uploaded the Keyboard Funeral video and added it to the gallery. It might be my favorite video I've made so far. It's almost ten minutes long, so those with extreme ADD be warned.
I also started the script for the Skelekid graphic novel, which will hopefully become a film later on. Pray for me.

Character Select

You probably saw the sweet character select screen that is our front page, and maybe you realized that you will be taken to the page of the person you click on. Which means Akina's half off the site is finally up (albeit under construction).
I added some more shirts to the store. There is a now a Mummy "All My Friends Are Dead Shirt"(S, M, L, XL), and you can get a charcoal Ghost shirt in something besides X-Large (S, M, L). I am going to add some non-clothing items real soon, so keep your eyes peeled.
Also, I will be selling my wares at the swap meet at the Glasshouse in Pomona on Saturday, November 11 from 10am to 4pm. Afterwards you should stick around and go to the Islands show. It will be ten million kinds of awesome.

Have a blast kids, and if you have the money go to a Revenge of the Book Eaters benefit in your area. So far they have been enviably amazing. A David Byrne/Sufjan double team in New York, Ben Gibbard in Chicago. The LA one is tomorrow night at UCLA, and there are still tickets. If you have a spare $150 or so, buy three tickets and take Akina and me. Jenny Lewis, Dave Eggers, Sarah Vowell, The Mountain Goats, Andy Richter, and more, all for a good cause. Let's do it.

Store Update

I updated the store and added the Heartbot shirt in pink. Right now there is only Youth Large and Youth X-Large, but I have adult smalls that I am about to print. I also have some red mediums and larges, and some black Youth X-Larges, adult smalls, and X-Larges, so keep an eye out for red heartbots, and black penguin and vampire shirts in those sizes. If there is something that you want that is not in the store, feel free to let me know, and I will make it available as fast as I can.

In other news, Islands is playing the Glasshouse in Pomona on Saturday November 11th, and I already have my tickets. Get yours, too.

Open for (Taking care of) Business

So, this is my site. It's not a contender for "Best Web Design," but I think it is at least aesthetically tolerable. This is the news section, if I got the link to work properly.

Basically I finally decided to consolidate all my efforts under one site. Besides a news section, there will be a gallery of things I have created (art, pictures, videos?, and otherwise), a hopefully functional and profitable store to keep me off the street, a list of upcoming events I am involved in or looking forward to, info all about me, and contact info and a mailing list sign-up.

Hopefully I will keep this updated with sweet stuff that will make you giggle. Let me know what you think.

Also, an extremely large thank you to Will Stein at lavashark.com for the help with hosting the site.
